Discussion #3 and #5

1.) Betty is seen to have a tremendous reaction towards Joan's application to study in Yale. Why? If you were Betty, would you have similar reaction?

I would have been very surprised because back then it was not known for women to go into law and go away from home and stuff. I think Betty was scared and just didn't want her to leave because they were both about to get married and once you get married you m
ust be a good wife and have dinner ready everyday by 5 o'clock.
2.) Betty's marriage to Spencer – do you think she was happy? Note her mother's refusal to let her stay with her. Why?
I do not think she was happy I think she was forced to marry him and he didn't even want her he wanted to do whatever he wanted to that's why he cheated on her. She was forced to because she was supposed to look like a well off good looking married women with a man who can support her.

  1. Betty thought it was not a good idea and that Joan would lose everything if she went to Yale. I agree with Betty being forced to get married, her mother must have been the one to do this just to get her out of her house.

  2. I think you were right. She seemed as if she was a little scared to open herself up to Yale but she had a choice.
